Training sessions at ECFI Munich on 18 September 2014

The European Conference on the Future Internet (ECFI) in Munich from 17 to 18 September 2014 offers a dedicated training day for SMEs on 18 September. Within this training day at the Research Center Garching of the Technical University Munich, the XIFI project will organise two introductory training sessions on the FI-WARE Open Ecosystem for SMEs.

The first introductory training session on 18 September from 10:00 to 12:00 aims particularly at SMEs and web-entrepreneurs who want to use the FI-WARE Open Ecosystem to run their experiments of Internet-based services and applications.

In this training session, SME representatives and web-entrepreneurs planning to submit a proposal in the open calls of the Future Internet PPP’s third phase will get a better understanding of the FI-WARE Open Ecosystem, which will help them prepare a good proposal.

The second session will take place on 18 September from 13:00 to 14:00. This training session will focus on explaining to representatives from FI-PPPP accelerator projects how to present the FI-WARE Open Ecosystem effectively to SMEs and web entrepreneurs. Phase 2 projects are also welcome to attend if they wish.

Further information about the training sessions is available on the XIFI training page.

For participating in the training sessions, registration to the ECFI Munich event is required.
In addition to the ECFI registration you can register a free seat in the training session via the XIFI training registration page or by sending an an email to edu(Replace this parenthesis with the @ sign)fi-xifi.eu

FI-PPP Day Trentino attracted SMEs and start-ups

Under the umbrella of the FI-PPP Liaison initiative, CREATE-NET and Engineering organized the first FI-PPP Day Trentino in Trento, Italy, on 4th June 2014. The FI-PPP Liaison initiative is an activity promoted by the EIT ICT Labs to cross-fertilize the FI-PPP ecosystem with the EIT ITC Labs ecosystems.

The purpose of this event was to inform SMEs and start-ups located in the Trentino region about the various opportunities for funding and innovation related to the FI-PPP Liaison initiative and the upcoming FI-PPP Phase III accelerators. The event provided the opportunity for the FI-PPP to ensure the engagement of new players on local level in the Trentino region.

Around 50 participants took part in the event and received an introduction about the FI-PPP, FI-WARE and FI-Lab, the 5 accelerators with links with the Trentino region, and the FI-WARE Trentino Challenge.

The FI-WARE Trentino Challenge is a prize for 2 SMEs, sponsored by EIT ICT Labs, for the development of a solution based on FI-WARE technology and related to OpenData or IoT of value for the Trentino region. More details abut the Open Call, which will close on the 16th July, can be found on the FI-WARE Trentino Challenge Website.

The FI-PPP Day Trentino was very lively, with many question by the participants related to access to the funding, ability to use the software beyond the end of FI-PPP programme, and commercial support of the offering. This has shown that there is still important work ahead to be done in ensuring a long-lasting road for the FI-PPP efforts, but also that the hype, the interest and concrete need exist, and the work the FI-PPP is pursuing is going in the right direction!

Further information, including videos, is available on the FI-PPP Day Trentino Website.

INFINITY and beyond – the main outcomes of the project available

The INFINITY project (www.fi-infinity.eu) has been completed. The main outcomes of INFINITY are available as follow:

1. XiPi (www.xipi.eu) is the first major outcome of INFINITY. XiPi is an online catalogue of Future Internet Infrastructures. There are now 237 infrastructures available on XiPi. The INFINITY team will keep maintaining the repository and promoting it. If you are an experimenter, check out the large selection of future internet infrastructures and find the one that suits you!

2. INFINITY also developed a Future Internet Experimental Infrastructures Roadmap. This document investigates how Future Internet infrastructures need to evolve and become sustainable. The roadmap can be used by public authorities at European, national and regional level, and by infrastructure owners and operators. www.fi-infinity.eu/portal/roadmap

3. The CDF developed by INFINITY is another important outcome of the project. The “Common Description Framework” is a taxonomy for the description of ICT related infrastructures, so that the key characteristics of infrastructures can be captured in a consistent and structured way. The ambition of the CDF is to become a standard for the description of Future Internet infrastructures. www.fi-infinity.eu/cdf

For more information on these outcomes and what they can bring to you, see the leaflet.

One of the insights from the event was that Europe is quite competitive in the digital arena. In his opening presentation, Ilkka Lakaniemi, Chairman of the Future Internet PPP, presented study results by ETLA, the Research Institute of the Finnish Economy, according to which 7 out of the 10 most advanced countries in regard to digitalisation of business are from Europe. Based on this, he expects a considerable impact of the FI-PPP on European growth and competitiveness an called the FI-PPP an engine for growth.
